Hi Mike,
I don't think the hobby is as 'broader & bigger' as it appears. It's grown and moved on for sure, but today, information dissemination is quicker and more accessable and it gives us that impression.
When I first joined my koi club(1988), information from the US was sent by our sister club in California by post and appeared in our newsletter a month later. If it provoked any comments or questions it would be another couple of months before we saw the replies. As for the rest of the US that was a black hole. Today, the size and scope of the international side of the hobby is no longer a mystery.
