where is the greatest satisfaction in koi to come from, tosai, nissai, sansai, yonsai?
The tosai are fun. They grow very fast and not too expensive. And there is nothing like growing your won from very young koi. The trouble is, you need a proper koi pond to do this and the system is stacked against you in terms of outcome. The reason for this is that you are buying from a professional who has deemed this fish unworthy to holding onto for another year, or believes that this fish has peaked and will only deteriorate over time. Still, growing tosai is a great learning experience about the realities of really good adult koi being the proverbial needle in a haystack.
Nissai are much like tosai in terms of gambling and betting against the house but maybe with slightly better odds. At least in terms of sexing the koi. The prices begin to climb here and tategoi emerge in this age group at shockingly high prices. Things like skin quality begin to be more predictable as does color quality and suggested but unfinished pattern. If tosai are roulette machines, then nissai are blackjack.
Sansai are an interesting entry point into better koi and one I have always felt comfortable buying. Good ones ARE expensive but the gambling associated with their final look is much less than with tosai and nissai. So in that sense, you are getting much better value for your money even though you are laying out more dollars/pounds/yen.
Yonsai- if you can afford it--- go for it! These are the big money fish. But they are typically 80% done and the risk of outcome is small. These are the fish for those who live in the here and now as they are typically ready for show competition, are almost exclusively females and some carry the name 'ringers'. If you love good koi and are impatient by nature, this is the age group for you. Be warned however, many of these fish are at the cusp of being soon ' past sell date' and one must understand they may only retain their maximum beauty another year or two.
Which ones do I like the best? That's easy, I like them all---- I'm koi kichi!
