I know at sometime soon there will be discussions about Aeromonas on serveral boards as Northern Hemisphere ponds exit winter.
In Australia this is the hottest time of year. Yesterday, we had 8 hours over 40C (104F) In the past few weeks I have been made aware of some ponds with daytime temperatures above 30C (86F). There have been a few examples of Aeromonas affecting some but not all ponds.
The cause of these:
- Increased organic loads due to increase feeding and the dieing off of algal blooms.
- Water change and filter flushing routines were not adjusted to the increased organic loads.
- Large pond temperature swings within a 24hour period in shallow or unshaded ponds.
- Reduced dissolved oxygen.
These environmental conditions have primed the koi to a weakened state, problems have followed. I know there is alot of discussion about Aeromonas at the end of winter and into spring. It would seem to my observations that Australia experiences more aeromonas problems at this time of year than at any other time. Perhaps, our winters milder and our summers are more extreme than some hobbiest realise?
Do other ponds with a similar climate experience regular summer aeromonas?
