Happy New Year Maurice. But the pros recommend boilies and corn and dough balls? Since the concept of bait is about a lurer to the hook. So there you are looking for a highly scented food and the 'insides' could just as well be saw dust!. Corn coated with stawberry jello for instance is way more attracting then algae and stays on a hook a lot better! Boilies with sausage base and egg and then rolled in a protein powder to make a dry paste with sweetner added on the outer covering, is a great lure for hungry carp! So as far as preference goes- the barbels dictate the reaction based on taste/scent of sweetness, strong protein odor etc.
One well known manufacturer of koi foods here in the states uses a standard or even below standard mix and simply sprays 'lure' ( catfish oil) over the pellets before bagging- the koi go wild for the pellets based on the smell. Live and learn--- JR
