Thanks for chiming in Larry and adding some valuable perspective.
We have done a lot of talking about just where the line is between parameters needed to keep koi really well, is. And maybe sometimes we get a bit 'extreme' debating whether a pH of 7.2 or 7.6 is the very best or if soft or moderately hard means much to a healthy koi?! I hope this back and forth between advanced and established keepers has helped to identify the elusive nature of the rugged carp's natural dietary needs and the variations therein.
We can feed our koi shrimp and worms and greens and brown rice and bread. We can feed them processed carbs held within koi pellets. We can even feed certain mixes and fresh foods right down to 48 F if we know what we are doing and understand the context and consequences of such actions.
But at the end of the day, the advanced keeper knows that these foods need to be in context to the seasonal environment and the natural cycle changes with the fish. This perspective really turns isolated studies from fact to trivia. - JR
