I see there's not much interest left in this subject so I'll move onto another but I did want to make one last fleeting observation/point. Don's friend asked sarcastically, " what are carp also 'dirt' eaters??"
The answer to that question is actually-- Yes, they are also dirt eaters! A portion of their diet at certain times of the year is detritus. Technically, detritus is decayed plant material. But in the case of what koi ingest we are talking about detritus and detritus associated content, which would be the many forms of bacteria and zooplankton that occupy the detritus layer.
In the case of macro/micro nutrient as well as mineral uptake, the carp is blessed with an ability to sort and then ingest and pass a broad spectrum of materials. In fact, carp and koi can often be seen 'mouthing' the surface in summer. Some see this as koi 'begging' for food and that sometimes can be the case. But wild and feral carp observed doing this is a response to the sensitive barbels 'smelling' amino acids that gather at the waters surface ( DOCs) and in this intake the koi brings in floating algae and 'the taste of protein in the form of DOCs which are made up of fatty acid chains and amino acids in the decaying state. Interesting that such a large animal can extract so many tiny benefits from some many sources. Being a wild carp is a hard way to make 'a living'.
One last thing- of you read the pages I posted above, you will notice that the contributor describes feral carp as specialized feeders of mollusc species. As I mentioned in the thread below, carp are opportunists and when any form of protein is common they will become exclusive to that source. But this is not to say they are prey specific or have a natural infinity for one prey species. They do not. Remember my gross example of some isolated groups feeding exclusively on human waste dumped in the area. This does not mean it is the best diet for them, just that they have found a way to survive easily on this source. So from the observation of that researcher, carp in England are specialized feeders of freshwater clams. In other studies they are specialized feeders on insects. Both the right in their myopic view.
The prototype Nishikigoi is a feeder on detritus ( Dead organic materials of all types), insects, photo/phyto plankton), water life of all forms, algaes and supplemented pellet food. There are NO clams in a mud pond! Some maybe in the wild field ponds sometime used- but certainly not enough to be anything but anecdotal in a koi's diet. Big picture, people! Big Picture---- JR
