I wanted to take the points I was making to Chris down below under "a thing or two---" and 'flesh' them out more because this is such an important subject to koi kichi trying to grow jumbo fish or at least getting the most out of tategoi they have purchased.
This has been a fun conversation about koi's nutritional needs ( as a dietary preparation on a commercial bases and also the needs of carp/koi when kept in a temperate climate.
I keep mentioning 'protein sparing'. This is a very easy but really important concept for growing fish.
If you ask yourself this " why do master breeders like Sakai send fish down south to be grown?" OR, "why do northern Japan fish eventually catch up to southern fish over a long period of time as a group?" The answer is down to 'length of growing season' and protein sparing.
The only downside to protein sparing and a long growing season is storage of excess carbohydrate in the liver and other organs. But this is the stuff of big volume jumbo fish!! The health issues however are only addressed by winter stasis. In the case of high carb diets, a fish will grow like a weed for two reasons- the fish tend to be overfed and two, the protein sparing allow and insure that no protein will be pulled from cells. But without winter the stored glycogen will be a health risk in the long run. IF given even a mild winter, the levels of glycogen from processed starch will fall rapidly.
As it turns out, this is all a balancing act of food mix and an exploitation of the body clock physiology of carp.
