Most folks I've encountered who use Koi Clays likely never consider the notion of hardening their water. The most popular use seems to revolve around improving water clarity and detoxifying water of contaminants that encourage algae growth ie phosphates. Most who use it think of it only in that light, and the fact that the clay acts as an effective flocking agent is a fringe benefit they may not even be fully aware of.
This forum being more advanced than most is likely one of the few where adding hardness would even come up, but it is a valid point.
So why would people wish to harden their water?
Some do have the need to augment the mineralization of their raw water if it is too soft to begin with, and if I had to choose between a beneficial clay and a combination of ice melt flakes, epsom salts, and baking soda, I'd likely go for the clay myself.
In the case of some I've encountered, hardening the water during the last week or two of show prep may be viable as a skin "fixative" to reduce the likelihood of a pattern going down during transport on certain fish, but that is a pretty narrow group of hobbyists in my estimation.
