well, I don't have the practical experience to say so, but logically, and actually statistically apeaking, the breeding of recessive to recessive or the concentration of recessive within a line increases the results.
The Isreali have tried for decades to 'crack the code' on koi genetics ( Rothbard). The reason it is so difficult is because there are MANY recessive traits in koi. In fact, you could say that koi are all about recessive traits. And there is, as you would expect, a pecking order of dominance in these traits. there is also linked recessive traits ( albino/kigoi with pink eyes, for instance). So out of the number of recessive traits and the combinations and dominance combinations--- well, the head spins!
If you get an opportunity, please read the article in the new/next KOI NATIONS that I wrote called 'Carp to Nishikigoi- The Missing Link'.
It is at this level of transition from the four common carp stock morphs to today's varieties that the many mutations and sports of common carp are slowly mixed. That genetic soup is what the breeders all use today in different combinations to create variations. JR
