Michael, tancho is the result of a recessive gene. And if :
a) there were no recessive genes in the lineage
b) koi did not have huge numbers in a single spawn or survival rates of the numbers were not high
you would not see a lot of tancho.
The gene expression responsible for tancho is a pied gene. Think of it as a single 'hole' in the fabric that allows for a base come to show in that area only. This makes for the tancho mark.
But this is very "japanese' of me to literally speak in terms of 'layers' as truly gene expression can be 'layers' of color but just as often certain genetic traits are simple down to genes expressioning themselves or NOT expressing themselves in certain locales and THAT allows for the 'other' normal gene to express itself there in that particular locale only. This is what tancho is.
A pied or pieball gene expression of a certain or specific type that is both recessive and inheritable.
The kohaku tancho is expression on white skin which masks the mutation of red.
The tancho goshiki on the otherhand is the same piebald gene expression found in kohaku tancho but within sumi based skin. You will notice a high percentage of kasasu goi clan with red or white bellies. These fish are not magoi but rather hyper melanistic koi. The red is the mutation that is as old as the yamakoshi hills ( 1800s at least). The pied gene come in many fixed types ( I think I can count three?)
It is simply amazing and remarkably complicated when you see a simple looking koi and stop to realize the sheer number of mutations and skin complexity contained in a single animal. JR
