This is my long time favorite article on the subject and I'm glad Chris chimed in.
As to the affordable availability on the Island, my natural instinct would be to seek out those who make clay pottery to see if they are using a calcium bentonite type clay. Failing that, I don't know what a good source might be in your locale, although Chris's list of uses might give you hints about the types of businesses that may use it near you.
