Very good article. But back up the bus a moment-----
"Natural mud ponds are lined with bentonite to seal them."
Natural ponds are natural and not lined with bentonite or anything else for that matter- they are 'natural'. Earthen damns in aquaculture 'may be lined with bentonite'.
The Japanese use wild field ponds, reservoirs and, the old rice patty systems, man made 'mud ponds' and new construct earthen damns- all under the simple heading of MUD PONDS. VERY few of these systems are lined with bentonite. Historically, very very few have been lined other than a mix. Springs, natural depressions and the centuries of snow run off bringing minerals and mud sealants are the 'water proofing' realities. This is not to say that ponds in other areas are not waterproofed with mud clays and bentonite. But do not be fooled into imagining that the water your koi come from is always or likely bentonite lined and sealed. - JR
"However it must be said that sodium bentonite works very well if it is used."
This is down to administration and function. I have, during the wacky PhD madness years, assisted in two ponds with completely blocked bottom drains from recommendations that Sodium bentonite kitty litter be used by the handful to improve koi environments. The devil is in the details. Kitty litter is made of this material as it will absorb urine and swell to ten times it's volume in the process, gaining a slurry like paste. Anyone who has ever changed a litter box knows this. Would you add that material to a pond with piping systems and filter media that needs to remain surface clear?
I don't think so. - JR
