65.33.140.25
Bentonite-type clays are found in many locales. The deposits vary in composition. Some have significantly higher calcium content. Some have higher sodium content, which is generally undesirable for the industrial uses of these clays. As a result, the deposits typically mined are low in sodium. Calcium content is irrelevant for most industrial purposes. In general vernacular, low sodium Bentonite-type clays get labeled as 'calcium bentonite', although the calcium content may not be great. All look about the same.
Lab analyses of 8 brands of such clayshowed the following ranges of component percentages:
Iron (as Fe2O3)- 5.25% to 17.6% [most in range of 5.25% to 7.7%]
Sodium (NaO2) - 0.20% to 2.12% [most below 1%]
Magnesium (MgO) - 1.0% to 4.49% [most below 3.33%]
Aluminium (Al2O) - 4.85% to 18.2% [most above 13.9%]
Silicon (SiO2) - 38.6% to 66.8% [most over 60%]
Potassium (K2O) - 0.14% to 3.14% [most under 1%]
Calcium (CaO) - 2.83% to 21.48% [ most under 5%]
I suggest nothing whatsoever as what is a desirable composition. These clays vary. And I would guess that brands vary from time to time, since there are many sources for the commodity and I would not assume that a packager of clay remains loyal to a particular source. Maybe there is something in individual preferences for a particular brand. Maybe not. Clay is dirt cheap... it is dirt. It is the transport, packaging and marketing that adds expense.
