aaah, the fifth horseman pipes up! Always good to know you have my back PAL,
Lee, the clay is available to everything from farmers to well drillers. It is all down to TWO paramters assumming you are not moving to Roddy recommendations and using 'other clays' like kitty litter that swell ten times their size and provide NO benefit ( Remember THAT one Roddy?)
The two things you want to know Lee are:
1) purity ( no contaminates that reduce concentration per weight. And heaven forbid, hurt the koi) Most montmorillinite samples will be mixed clays depending on mining.
2) grade. This is down to grain size and dissolvability. It can be processed fine and very fine. there is actually a 'research grade'
The purpose of pure montmorillinite in koi ponds is two fold:
to act as a flocculant and absorb as it sinks in the water column
to introduce calcium as a component of water but also to aid in the oxidative state of water. The oxidative feature is probably the most important for advanced keepers whereas the flocculant abilities are probably more important for struggling beginners.
Finally, in regards to performance of specific clay products, you need to know that for beginners some products add ammonia absorbing compounds, baking soda and activated carbon powders. Very creative for water clarity issues and struggling ponds. But it is getting away from what most of us here on NI look for in a clay.
