Catfish is closer to eighty cents a pound. Been awhile, but I managed a 4000 acre catfish farm many years ago. We harvested about eighty thousand pounds of fish a day and fed about two hundred and forty thousand pounds of feed a day.

The farm was "vertically integrated" and we went from egg to fillet on one facility. The hatchery put out nearly forty million fish a year.

Twenty five employees in the hatchery, fifty in the field and over a hundred in the processing plant.

Now I been to Dainichi, Blue Ridge, Billy Bland, Pool's, Suda, Jinbe, and a hundred other koi farms. None of them and none I ever heard of come anywhere close.

Saying that, you also got to look at the model for a koi breeder. I say right up front I do not fit the model.

Koi breeding is the fish equivalent of breeding race horses. Precious few do it for the money. The typical Japanese (or American for that matter) koi breeder made a fortune at something then went to breeding koi. By fortune, I talk billions, not millions. Now, when the money doesn;t matter and has little meaning, bulldozers, track hoes, levee building, well drilling, and all the rest don't amount to a hill of beans in the scheme of things.

The atypical koi breeder is the dirt farmer that evolved from rice and fish farmer to koi breeder, or the nutty fish farmer that felt it was time to work on art and beauty as enough time had been spent pursuing science and technology to produce food.
