There are some points I'm unlcear on:

'On one side I hear about the hard work and low profit margine talk from farmers.' - are you referring to Nishikigoi farmers?

Yes, my understanding is that all the land is leased from the government.

In the greatest scheme of things the cost of machinery and labour on that pond is probably a drop in the ocean as far as costs of running an operation the size of Marudo's. That pond will probably have perhaps 1/2 million pounds worth of Nishikigoi in it once complete. Compare that with a weeks labour for 4/5 people and some plant hire.

The Nishikigoi industry as a whole is big business. Some of the players are big, many are comparatively tiny.

The ornamental fish industry, worldwide, is enormous, all over the world massive amounts of money are invested in farming different species.

Whilst the market for Nishikigoi around the world is in a state of flux, particularly the domestic market here in Japan, perhaps the UK and US markets too, other markets around the world, particularly Asia and mainland Europe, I understand are increasing.
