Thom,
Thanks for responding.
Mike's article is entitled "The Mud Pond alternative" and the basic premise is that the mud ponds of Niigata have perfect conditions for raising and conditioning nishikigoi. He discusses "the Japanese way" of keeping koi and basically says that as soon as a koi comes out of the mud and enters a hobbyist's pond it starts to deteriorate.
He expands on the value of soft water, growing seasons, relatively low pH etc. and goes on to talk about the importance of koi being able to escape from the sun and regulate exposure. Mike then critiques some filter systems and talks about RO water.
Finally Mike describes the TDS differential between source water and pond water as "the single most useful test reading that we can possibly have when testing our water".
Interestingly he states that he believes a high TDS level is a greater limiting factor than pheromones in limiting growth.
I have been considering investing in an ORP meter and was interested in Mike's opinion that TDS will give similar benefit (as it typically goes "hand in hand" with ORP but can't be "dressed-up" by use of potassium permanganate.
That's the gist of it - I hope that I haven't misrepresented anything!
Roger
