JR suggested that I post here on NI to see if I can get Thom B. and others to respond....
In his thought provoking article in the most recent Koi Nations, Mike Snaden seems to be saying that he prefers Total Dissolved Solids (or, more particularly, the differential in TDS between pond water and source water) over ORP for a general assessment of water quality. He points out that: "1) Low TDS differentials (pond vs. mains TDS) usually go hand in hand with ORP and 2) If our ORP levels are low, we can use Potassium Permanganete to 'dress things up'. However this is just a temporary fix, as the TDS levels will remain untouched and may continue to climb further".
I'm interested in a) people's experiences in using TDS Differential as a "top level" assessment of overall water quality and b) the relative merits of TDS Differential vs. ORP.
Thanks!
Roger
