Thanks everyone For your input. I havent checked GH lately, and Find that my test kit reagents are used up. I'll do that. Dick...ph is dead level at 7 and very steady with a constant reserve of about 80. I am feeding very lightly as you suggested cooked barley, and occasionally some wheat germ low protien type food. As i mentioned before Ammonia, nitrite are undetectable and nitrate is about 5 mgl. I dont know the ORP reading. I guess I should pick up a pinpoint orp meter. I assumed it was acceptable because of the steady ph and alkaline reserve readings as well as lack of foam, and my water change practices. Sun light might be ruled out as the pond is covered with a cedar pergola with a 2x2, 70% open spacing cedar trellis top to it . In summer I put a 50% black shade cloth over the structure, and I remove it in winter. Stocking levels are 16 koi 18-20" or so in 6000 US gallons. Some male and some female. My filtration system is the Art Lempki system. Genetics may be playing a role... I dont have any gc's for sure, mostly the best gosanke I could find/afford via japan koi on line, Eastern, and Genki. Some decent breeders, but admittedly not there very best stock. JR, im comfortable that with the pond being heated, im not to cold or to warm and some fish have do have much better whites than others. I admitt I have not yet come to fully understand some of the skin quality references that you talk of. Plastic whites, China whites, depth of white, and so on. Ive not been at all active with the greater koi community via shows and clubs so my knowledge is limmited to what I see and hear on the web. I dont even know another person personally with a real koi pond other than one visit to Arts old house ! Perhaps I'll make it to Westminster in the fall a learn from some first hand observations! thanks again.
John
