Hi Carl
Constant tricking through a purifier is a very good way of achieving water changes. It is important to measure the volume being treated to avoid exhaustion of the purifier. It is very easy to under-estimate the volume involved.
Your pond and filtration system will be geared up to the level of water changes you are achieving. To suddenly cut off the supply of new water is very much like suddenly adding a lot of new fish. Always avoid big changes in any pond parameter.
There is no temperature cut-off point at which you turn off the water. I suggest that as pond temps fall you gradually reduce the quantity of fresh water, either with a timer or say turning off one day and then on for two days, then on and off every other day. I would still do low-level changes in the winter, no matter how cold it gets.
As you reduce the volume of water changes you should test for ammonia and nitrite levels, increasing the volume of fresh water if these parameters show any signs of elevation.
Michael
