Hi Greg
Okay, we are then talking about a truly closed system.
Management of all water parameters is vital.
You still cannot rule out water changes. You have to relace evaporation losses plus additional water to dilute some of the inevitable accumulations that occur.
So, you manage the parameters of KH/pH. Oyster shell etc, maybe even bicarbonate of soda may be required.
You manage mineral depletion; clay additives in the water and the diet are helpful.
You manage bacterial populations with competitiive exclusion of pathogenic species.
You have your pondwater checked regularly for toxins, especially metals and pesticides and you make as certain as you can that there are no contaminants building up.
You avoid over-feeding. You have the best filtration. Ozone is a practical possibility. In a truly closed system I would use it.
You avoid over-stocking.
You check your water parameters regularly.
I would also take advatage of the winter to wind everything down, only heating to maybe reduce the length and severity of the winter.
Do you agree?
Michael
