Posted by Michael Van Neste I was there within a month of the earthquake, and every spring and autumn since. The major works in the countryside to stabilise steep hillsides, the reconstruction of roads and bridges, as well as redevelopment of devastated housing in the towns, has been utterly remarkable. Also the recovery of the koi industry has confounded the pessimists, although many smaller breeders have given up. The strong have got stronger and the weaker have fallen away. I have some very close Japanese friends. We can never really know them. The culteral gap is huge. But we can certainly admire them and enjoy many mutual delights. Michael
