By the way, yes, there is a history of a number of JX-305's going braindead - with almost identical symptoms. I have read at least a dozen different posts about this issue, but they date over the last 3 or 4 years, so I don't know how big the problem really is.
However, there are a hundred good ones around to every broken one (that statistic is a very loose guess, but if you watch online auctions, almost all of them for sale are fully functional).
My suggestion would be to back up your user patches regularly - just in case.
