: Hi David
: 1st,Congratulations on your first drive!If
: you haven't already, drain the trans and
: transfer case and see if you find metal.
: This would answer the question, if you do
: find metal rebuild both gear boxes and the
: overdrive if you have one. Metal in the gear
: oil gets everywhere.

: I just took my '59 FC-170 out for it's first
: drive. It was generally successful and I
: made it home. But in first gear, the truck
: makes a slamming noise through part of the
: gear and tries to jump out. Once I get it
: moving, second and third are good, pull
: smoothly and don't make any noise. Ditto for
: I'm wondering if the gear is stripped or
: missing teeth.
: Things I've done or checked:
: The driveshafts and U-joints are tight, no
: missing parts.
: The transfer case, transmission and rear
: diff all have oil.
: I looked through the rear diff fill hole
: while spinning the back tires and didn't see
: anything out of order but I couldn't see the
: pinion ring.
: I have replaced the shifter bushings with
: shock bushings per someone's suggestion here
: on the board.
: Shifter canes are intact and attached. I've
: added a couple of washers here and there on
: the cane ends to take out some of the slop.
: Does anyone have any additional things I
: should check or should I start looking into
: rebuilding the transmission to replace a
: stripped gear?
: Thanks for your help,
: David in Kansas City
