Then I drove it from Milwaukee to Minneapolis. On the way home was the same noise, but no drop in oil pressure, and the noise went away. Life was good.
What had happened was the #1 piston top ring land had failed. The engine seemed to spit that out ok, but the piston ring broke to pieces and came out of the opening and imbedded the pieces in the head and piston. Ha, simple fix at 25 years old, replace the piston.
I like the idea of keeping the original engine. However, understand its limitations.
