I did a disc brake conversion on a 73 CJ. That had the open knuckle design on the front axel. I'm not sure what you would do with a closed front axel. I suppose that since the backing plates worked, I guess the disc brake conversion kit would work out fine. It cost me $1,000 for the kit 2 years ago from R&P
I took the old 73 CJ backer plates and upgraded the 170 front brakes to self adjusting. Everything fit and the brake parts were easy to find. I'd like to do the rears, but finding the correct backing plate will be a challenge. The majority of the braking is done by the front brakes, so having the better set-up there seemed to make sense. I don't know what would fit the 53, maybe the 73 CJ might.

: So Im working on the brakes on the Willy,
: and the Pedal pretty much goes to the floor
: with minimal stopping power. Im going to
: start by bleeding the system and looking for
: leaks, but my question is, what upgrade are
: availible for our trucks?
: Right now it has the factory single line
: master cylinder and drums all around. Is
: there anything I can do to upgrade that. I
: was looking at what willwood had to offer
: for universal kits, but dont think it will
: fit under the dash. Thanks in advance!
