If your FC transfer case is still complete just pull the top back cover off where the Warn OD will eventually bolt on and count the number of teeth on the top drive gear on the transmission output shaft. Oil level just below that cover so no need to drain oil, very little will run out. Its that gear tooth count you need to know not the shaft as you ask in your post.. That top drive gear gets removed and replace by the OD. The shaft count is 6 spline and is the most common, the only other Jeep Warn OD has 10 spline and is for the T-14 3 speed trans ONLY and won't work on any other application unless the 10 spline Blank is changed to a 6 spline blank, about a $350 part from Advance Adapters new.
See you soon in Phoenix
: thanks, now that you mention it, I think you
: are correct regarding tooth count.
: there is always a market for the Warn OD
: units, Ill post and sell on ebay. Herm may
: be able to switch over to 29 tooth, or Ill
: exchange with Herm. He has a stock of re
: manufactured and lots of parts.
: See you in a couple of weeks,

: Hey Mark,
: I'll have to check for sure but I thought
: that all the FC's had a 29 tooth gear. I
: thought the 26 tooth was for the earlier
: transfer cases with the smaller shaft (1
: 1/8" or 7/8") Not all is lost if
: this is the case. I'll see if I can find
: out for sure today as I venture out to the
: shed. I think you can swap to the earlier
: T/C case on your FC and make the OD work.
: Herm would know for sure.

: Hello all,
: Mark from Wisconsin here. I have a Warner
: Overdrive that I am sending to Herm for
: rebuild, inspect, etc. The internals are
: looking really nice, all the gears are
: clean, no chips, the bearings look and roll
: well. It came off of a Spicer transfer
: case. The snap ring is good, the odd washer
: came out, and nut came off easily, no
: fighting. It was an easy removal. Checking,
: the stamp on the big gear on the OD
: planetary gearing assembly reads: 26.
: Please someone confirm that the shaft on the
: 57 FC 170 is in fact a 26 tooth BEFORE I
: send this thing off to Herm.
: AND, if someone has a spare Warner outer
: housing / shroud with shifter shaft intact,
: I would be interested as the guy I bought
: the OD from shipped it ATTACHED to the
: Spicer Transfer case, in transit the shifter
: shaft on the OD was really smacked pretty
: hard, bending it and snapping the aluminum,
: cast in retaining ring on the backside of
: the OD housing. Nice guy... Not. Just the
: outer housing and shifter mechanism, I have
: everything else.
: Ill see Y'all in Phoenix in March,
: Happy Motoring!
: Mark from Wisconsin
