A friend of mine likes to use 26 tooth gears because each tooth is a little thicker, and presumably stronger. I've never broken a 29 tooth OD, and I've been using Warn OD's since 1979. They belong in all original Willys 4x4 vehicles to make them more enjoyable. I often find myself using 2nd gear with OD while driving off road in high range. The transmission gear ratios are close enough to leave the Warn OD in direct drive while driving in low range.
: Hello all,
: Mark from Wisconsin here. I have a Warner
: Overdrive that I am sending to Herm for
: rebuild, inspect, etc. The internals are
: looking really nice, all the gears are
: clean, no chips, the bearings look and roll
: well. It came off of a Spicer transfer
: case. The snap ring is good, the odd washer
: came out, and nut came off easily, no
: fighting. It was an easy removal. Checking,
: the stamp on the big gear on the OD
: planetary gearing assembly reads: 26.
: Please someone confirm that the shaft on the
: 57 FC 170 is in fact a 26 tooth BEFORE I
: send this thing off to Herm.
: AND, if someone has a spare Warner outer
: housing / shroud with shifter shaft intact,
: I would be interested as the guy I bought
: the OD from shipped it ATTACHED to the
: Spicer Transfer case, in transit the shifter
: shaft on the OD was really smacked pretty
: hard, bending it and snapping the aluminum,
: cast in retaining ring on the backside of
: the OD housing. Nice guy... Not. Just the
: outer housing and shifter mechanism, I have
: everything else.
: Ill see Y'all in Phoenix in March,
: Happy Motoring!
