If the truck has been sitting for more than a year or so, call Carl Walck at Walck's 4WD. Replace all the brake parts and the brake system will work like new. If you can't turn the drums, Walck's has new brake drums, too.
If you will be re-powering with a big engine and an automatic (without engine compression helping to slow you down) replace the axles with 3/4 T Ford or Chevy axles with larger brakes.
The consensus (as I have read it) is not to use front disk brakes on an FC.
I haven't had a problem with factory FC brakes in the 30 years I've been driving them. But I don't run V-8's and high gears tailgating on the freeway. And I keep up with tire and brake maintenance. I try to prevent "panic stops." My favorite gear in an FC is first gear in low range.
As for suspension, I like the ride of the factory FC-170 springs. Just replace the shock absorbers, which would make the springs last longer. (I don't like the ride of an FC-150.)
