Dan,
I agree with Bruce, so if the crank doesn't turn even with the plugs out, or if it turns and water comes out of a hole, don't keep trying see if you can break anything more.
At this point if it doesn't move, you have to open it up, here is my best opinion of what happened, (it doesn't matter about why it didn't start, if the choke was out, or not). If it is 50 years old, expect that it broke inside, the first thing that breaks when it doesn't start:
as the crank is turned by the starter, it tries to start, as you release the starter, the crank then, rocks back, this is what happens, the crank timing gear is a small steel gear, the cam gear is a larger fiber gear, that gear probably broken some teeth, start with the timing gear cover, if that is OK, it may be a spun main bearing, anything else will allow, a partial turn on the crank.

: I had a socket and good sized 1/2 ratchet with
: no movement at all? It has been running
: fine. not strange sounds and always starts
: right up. However the choke was stuck
: open,(that's why it didin't start right up)
: so it may be flooded. You would think if
: there was enough gas in the cyl to hydraulic
: lock it that I would smell gas but it
: doesn't smell like gas at all? really
: strange. Could a stuck valve cause it???
: Thanks, Dan.
