The Gama goat used the same transmission as the 40's-early 50's era Chev/Gmc stubnose cabovers only internals were updated to more heavy duty usage behind the GMC diesel>The topshift cover is probably 40's design as it fit the bill for remote shifting capability. But even looking for a cabover shifter will be just about as allusive as a Goat shifter. That's why the post to see if anyone else had crossed these waters and what they used.I believe the shifter uses a single shift rod for gear shifting and a cable for the selector to determine what gears are shifted but I'm guessing. : I thought they were using the huge Clark
: transmissions on vietnam era Gama Goat and
: the same as the gas or diesel 70s GMC fire
: truck type remote shift cabovers, same was
: used on Ford F-600 and bigger forward
: Controls there are a lot of those. They had
: u-joints, and a shift rod that went around
: the motor. The earlier GMC of the fifties
: and forties, those trucks were snub nosed,
: they did use the SM 420 top loaders, shifter
: was bent forward, except the doubled V6 2
: inline, it had a Clark and at least one
: Brownie .
: Giant diesel GMC forward control cab over
: flip top semi used shifter with cables. to a
: lot of transmissions

: I'm on a project repowering a Fc170 with a
: Buick v6 and using a Saginaw SM420
: transmission with a Gama Goat remote shifter
: top cover. What I'm curious is if anyone else
: has used this transmission and if so what
: cab shifter did you use?It is a selector
: type top cover that was used in the 40's and
: 50's and floor shifters were available back
: then for them. The same transmission was used
: in Chev and Gmc cabovers.Gama Goat parts are
: scarce and I'm looking for a later day
: alternative.Thanks Bob
