Here's a few pictures from a page I made some time ago. It shows different bed fastening methods. A quick answer is they did it many different ways. Most stock configurations that I have seen cut a timber to the profile of the frame and then used u-bolts to fasten the bed to the frame. I hope this helps, Craig
