Dennis has the better of the two, 4.3 Chevrolet TH 400, hopefully a tunnel port vortec engine.
Scott,
Have you bought all this stuff, front wheel drive 3.8 II, stuff, the exhaust is for front wheel drive, so you need custom headers, don't forget to add Oxy sensors, the oil pan is for front wheel drive a full flat front to rear sump, unlike the conventional rear sump, as found on a rear wheel drive, this means it has to be mounted so high in the cab to clear the front axle, from hitting the bottom of the oil pan. worse is that the injection intake manifold has a supercharger on top of it, that puts the throttle body sticking out the back of the cab in the bed. then the electronic managed systems without the electric shift automatic can get ugly.
I have never seen a crank on the 3800 II that has a drilled crank for the pilot bearing, in case someone wanted to use it for rear wheel drive, Motor mounts are a really bad issue since these blocks were casted for sideway mounting, 3800 II heads are different than 3.8 blocks so you can't go that way. The worse thing about your conversion is the T-90/D-18. 2.8 bell housing + adapter + do you have a balanced flywheel in mind that you are going to use.
Not trying to burst your bubble, but save some money, or if your crazy about exotic, then build or buy my modified FC-Range Rover fully boxed rectangular tube chassis, aluminum V8, 4 speed ZF / NP246, full floaters, 3.56 gears, 4 wheel discs, 4 coil springs, bobbed rear frame at axle.
But do this first, take a ride in a an S-10 4.3 TP or TB, or better if it is the S-10 4 cylinder Iron Duke, with an automatic, (these are the same motors as Jeep had in early 80s CJ5s) if the performance is good enough, then make it real easy put a short Chevy TH-350 with an NP-205, this stuff is unbreakable, then if you want to make the best for the money use the axles from a 76 and later, CJ5, flanged rear , discs in front. Best, is buy an 81 CJ5 4 cylinder, it will have the right gears and add a TH350/np205 and put your FC body on it add steering and the best part is no computers.
