I couldn't get my horn button to work so I mounted a after market button on the side of the steering column.

: Simple answer, yes hook the battery directly
: to the horn. That will test the horn
: itself. The relay is a switch that will
: handle more power than the horn button
: (switch). The horn button triggers the relay
: switch which is what then sends power to the
: horn.

: So, no laughing please, but I have a newbie
: question. The horn button on my 170 was
: broken when I bought it so I don't know if
: it works. Before I spend the time to clean
: it up and paint it, I want to know how I can
: test it to see if it works. My thought was
: to hook up a + and - to a battery and see if
: it honks. But then I wondered what the
: purpose of the horn relay was. So, I'll ask
: a stupid question "how do I test my
: horn?"
