Dumb beginner question

How do I even get started? I am in my mid-twenties and don't even know where I should go or how to go about buying stocks or even setting up a portfolio. Should I go online? Ameritrade? Not really sure what the best way to do this is --I have limited funds but would like to do something with the money I have and plan to invest a small amount each month.
