Posted by Len Begin with the center of the belt just beneath your navel. Wrap it around behind you, around in front again, then back behind you, so that it ties at the small of your back. That way the stiff backboard of the hakama rests on top of the obi knot and won't slide down. Use a regular "bow" knot, just like you would make with your shoelaces. The sageo do not tie to anything. After you slip the saya (scabbard) through the kaku obi, the sageo simply drape over the saya where it protrudes beneath the obi.

It may not be clear from this written description, but I'll give it a try. First, I assume you are referring to the kaku obi, which is about twice as wide and half as thick as a karate or judo obi --
