Posted by DarkAngel To lock one self into thinking that the past is perfection and can't be improved with ones own style is pure lunacy. Sure for a base practice learning the proper ways to hold your blade and swing your sword. A strong foundation will always help you achieve your goals. But don't think that a student couldn't pick up a sword and with a keen mind develope a style that could humble many traditional styles. Everything begins with the mindset and the spirit to achieve. I do not fear the Blademaster that has mastered his artform to it's fullest... I fear the man who sits alone on the mountain top developing something new and brilliant. Both concepts have merit if ones spirit is strong enough and mind is clear. I won't underesitmate either mindsets. I suggest you do that same. DarkAngel

I find that assuming that only those wanting to learn true swordsmanship have to go to a dojo or a previous school of swordmanship, very closed minded. Sure if you wish to learn from past styles and master them go right ahead. However you forget that everything had a beginning. When the first sword martial skills were developed and sword styles were being created it was one man watching and observing their opponents to develope a fighting styling using the tool at hand, his sword.
