An ebony streak raced down the shoreline. Slinging mud behind his heels.
Windigo was /free/.
Such freedom he hadn't felt since his mother had died. His dad was such an overbearing and worrisome old coot. If it hadn't been for his Uncle Mordecai explaining how young brute's need freedom, he might still be smothered in his father's shadow.
Which was just a figure of speech because Windigo had surpassed his sire, Caleb, in height and mass.
He was a giant hybrid. Easily larger than the average mountain male wolf. Which was saying something, for most of the mountain wolves were far above average sized.
Windigo surpased most of them.
He was a curious blend of wolf, collie, and great pyrenees. Pyr being the greatest percentage, as his father, Caleb, was a purebred. But aside from the boost in size and a slightly broader skull his makeup was unmistakably wolflike, with subtle defining touchups of a collie. Like a narrower chest, slender chest, and sharp muzzle.
He had a wolf's almond eyes, a deep entrancing amber color. A wolf's proud peaked ears, long back, and bushy tail.
His color was a unique blend of russet and tan undertones set against a sleek and silky black with a white splash across his broad muzzle and the tip of his tail, as if added just for good measure.
He was an intriguing and handsome sight, with pleasant masculine features and very wild eyes.
And they sparkled joyously in the wind as he ran. As a dog does, for the no purpose other than the sheer joy of running.
Atlast he came to a trotting halt, panting heavily but with a contented expression. He waded fearlessly into the water right up to his broad chest and lapped thirstily for several minutes. When atlast his thirst was sated and his panting had subsided he splashed heavily back to shore, leaping onto shore and shaking vigourously sending droplets of water flying everywhere.
Finished, he breathed a huge sigh of contentment, and swept his amber orbs up the shoreline, seeking any other sign of life.
