Louki noticed the scent first; the sharp, unfamiliar aroma bore no resemblance to the other wolves he’d encountered, though it certainly belonged to a canine. For some reason, it made him think of halitosis. As Louki waited for the beast to emerge, he prepared himself for anything: a hideously deformed blight on the face of the mountain; a towering monstrosity of herculine proportions, replete with slavering fangs and sickled talons; even a human, though he doubted that the human scent was quite so bestial.
When Cu Sith finally emerged into view, Louki was rather bemused. His own homeland was devoid of all but wolves and their prey animals -- his former pack had had no natural competitors with which to contend for their daily ration -- so this bizarre creature, with its striated coat and curiously hunched figure, was like nothing he had ever seen. He wondered, vaguely, whether it was edible.
Kuna, was it? If Louki had managed to stifle the disdain that crept into his face, it would have been a miracle; as it was, the grimace was as conspicuous as his mismatched eyes. “Kuna, oh?” he asked in a slow, aloof drawl, “Whatever would make you think I’m from there?”
Louki trudged through life as if it were a particularly nasty case of the plague: short, terribly inconvenient, and exquisitely painful; and this jaded worldview was most strikingly evident in his voice. Sardonic, disenchanted, world-weary, yet somehow dramatically expressive, Louki spoke like someone whose experience far surpassed his youth.
