((OOC: Mwaha... developing Louki's motives a bit further. He's a little twit, he is o_x))
It had started with an idea, a vague, inchoate thought that flashed and cavorted and nipped at him like a school of agitated minnows. He had been prowling along the bank of the River Danson, trying vainly to distinguish between refracted sunlight and the more elusive glimmer of scales beneath it. He didn’t actually expect to catch any of the fish that every now and then breached the surface; with one eye blinded by a milky blue cataract, he lacked any sensation of depth, making fishing out of the question.
He ventured towards the water’s edge, his long, lanky legs sinking several inches into the silt and snow. As he peered shrewdly into the icy water, he began taking stock of the events of the past few days. Never in all his life had Louki encountered such a motley assortment of lunatics, megalomaniacs and supernatural phenomena. First, there was Crepuscule, the little psychopath who defied all sense of good taste with his cannibalistic predilections. Then there was Taboo, the bat-winged alpha of the Kuna pack, whose brazen attitude left a sour tang at the back of his tongue and whose leadership skills, Louki suspected, were as flimsy as his manners.
And then the thought solidified. He, Louki, the delinquent, outcast by his people and left to fend for himself in a strange and alien wilderness – he, for all his scrawny frame and impaired vision, all his scars and broken bones and all-round physical inferiority, was probably a whole lot cleverer than many of the denizens who called this mad mountain their home.
It wasn’t as if the others he had met were stupid; far from it. But they lacked the driving ambition, the calculating guile, the shrewd distrust of others that were, so far as he was concerned, his most distinguishing characteristics. With his ambition, and his wit and craft at his disposal, what was to stop Louki from seizing a pack himself? The thought appealed to him, and for a moment he forgot the fish capering taunting at his feet.
But there was one hiccup. What sorry alpha would be thoughtless enough to accept him into his pack?
