It was dark. The trees cast a spattered pattern of moonlight onto the banks of the river, creating a black and white scene with a twist of blue. The wind only whispered tonight, keeping mostly to itself as it brushed past unsuspecting creatures of the night. The moon was high in the sky, watching over her children from a distance too far away, unable to caress the ones she loves. It was a sad existence, this dark and secluded thing that could only be described as a still night.
Under her surrogate mother's distant watch, this young, black wolf sat on the bank of the river, staring at her silhouette one the white, glassy water. It wavered with the light breeze as the she-wolf stared into her own icy blue eyes. They were the only thing that showed up in color on mirror tonight. The reflection stared back at her with the same concentration, seemingly just as lost in thought as the real wolf.
Purpose? Was there such a thing? Should there be such a thing? Solar Shadow had been asking herself this question for quite some time. Ever since she had been seen as mature, she seemed to have lost her sense of self. Being a pup was far easier than adulthood; less to think about. And a thinker she was. And, if this was a dream, would one recognize reality when they awoke or would they believe reality to be a dream? It seemed that one would need to live never knowing for sure what was what...
The femora tore her eyes away from the trembling surface of the water as a scent encroached upon her senses. It was feline, though an unrecognizable one. Sol had only known one feline in her life, a snow leopard named Lucien, and he had died quite early in her puppyhood. The onyx wolfess arose slowly from her haunches and focused her eyes upwind. She could barely make out the movement of camouflage fur only twenty or so yards away. It was small compared to what Lucien had been, but moved with the same feline grace.
Sol watched as the feline stopped at the edge of the water. What could the harm be of making her presence known? She did not fear death, so there was nothing more to lose.. The black wolf walked silently along the riverbed until she was within hailing distance, standing only ten or so feet from the strange feline.
"Good evening," her voice was soft, but not hushed, and was pleasant to the ear. It was rather unlike the wolf to approach others, but tonight she wasn't quite herself. How fitting...
