I think planning your life is mostly illusory. It's surely worthwhile to know the general direction you'd like to go, but it's no use planning too many of the details. A detailed plan just stops you from grabbing opportunities as they come your way. The opportunities may not fit into your plan, and if you stick to your plan too much, you may just let them all pass by without grabbing them! The difference between a lucky and an unlucky person is not mainly in the number of opportunities they get, but rather in their ability to grasp those opportunities or not! So while you should be clear to yourself about what you want and what you don't, it probably pays off to be oppotunistic in how you get there!
