I was his sergeant and also with Laurie on Mt Nicholson when he was killed with a Japanese Mountain gun that landed a shell, making a direct hit. Laurie was operatuing a Bren Gun with his friend and army buddy. The action speaks for itself as a Bren Gun is a deadly weapon when used right. His friend and army buddy Edgley was also wounded in the stomach and died soon after.
"B" Company was taking up positions on Mount Nicholson, and we did not know that the Japanese had set up positions during the night. The night had been cold and wet as it was raining during the night and we were ambushed
: Although your uncle has no known grave, CWGC
: internal records suggest that he was indeed
: killed at Mount Nicholson, in the action
: that preceded the fall back to Mount
: Cameron. A number of fatalities were
: initially interred at Middle Gap, and it is
: possible that he was one of these.
