I remember Dale Ellingwood, One cold morning we were tied up along side State Pier he had the 4 to 8 watch and in performance of his duties he went aft to take a draft reading. The area around the sail was coated with black ice...
my understanding is he lost his footing and went down the side he may have struck his head on the tank top. It was early spring of 1964.
Dale was a good man he he had a wife an a child and lived in a small town outside of new London I do not recall the name of the town.
The deck log for that period of time would have a through discription of his tragic accident I think the Navy would be able to point you in the right direction and assist you with further information...perhaps where those deck logs are stored.
