Shipmates,
It is our sad duty to inform you all of the passing of a shipmate. William P. Nixon, 69, of 11 Muster Ln., died Tuesday Sept. 2, 2008, after a brief illness. His wife Georgianna (Baker) Nixon died in 1987. Born in Milford, Mass., on Nov. 4, 1938, he was the son of William A. and Mary (Devito) Nixon and lived in Ledyard 40 years.
Bill qualified in submarines onboard the USS IREX (SS 482) in 1960. He also served aboard the USS SKATE, the USS GEORGE C. MARSHALL, and the USS TRITON. Bill served in the US Navy for 30 years and retired as a MMCM(SS), following his US Naval service he worked as a mechanic for Sears. Bill joined USSVI Groton base in 2001 and was a Life member. He was also a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the Masons Lodge.
He was a graduate of Milford High School and earned his Associates Degree from Thames Valley Technical College. He enjoyed skeet shooting, computers, muscle cars (especially corvettes), and he was a Harley Davidson motorcycle enthusiast. .
Bill is survived by two sons, Stephen M. Nixon of Kenosha Wis., and Paul W. Nixon of New Durham, N.H.; a daughter Gianna M. Nixon-Saldinger of Rochester, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Andrew, Danielle, Morgan, and Stephen Jr.; a brother, Richard Nixon of Whitinsville, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday Sept. 5, in Tancrell-Jackman Funeral Home, 35 Snowling Rd., Uxbridge, Mass. Burial will follow in the VA National Cemetery in Bourne, Mass. Calling hours at the funeral home in Uxbridge are from 9 to 11 a.m. on Friday Sept. 5. Donations in Williams memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
