Hi Nancy, I spoke with your brother the other day and informed him about our reunion in Charleston in September.Children of USS TRITON crewmember are most welcome to attend. We would love to have you there and you all would be most welcome. Details are on this website.
Joe served on submarines in the Pacific during WWII and submariners who made combat patrols searching out and sinking Japanese warships and merchant vessels received war patrol pins. Those guys were well respected in the submarine force to this day.
I would recommend you contact the Navy archives and get a copy of your fathers service record and it would tell you how many patrols he made and on what boats.
Joe was a father figure to the young guys in his radio gang and a very straight forward fair and honest guy. He was a great chief and we all loved him. I was young and full of piss and vinegar and your father had to come and bail me out of jail after a stupid bar fight. He never chewed me out for that one although I deserved it. You should be very proud of your father. It was an honor to serve with him.
