Posted by Henry Jackson Shipmates, Again it is my sad responsibility to inform you of the passing of one of our HOLLAND CLUB Members. Donald R. Wilson passed away on 14 Mar 2007. His obituary is located here Don Wilson originally Qualified in Submarines onboard USS GUAVINA (SS 362) in 1951. He later served aboard USS SEA CAT (SS 399) 1951 - 53, attended Naval Nuclear Power School and was one of the first Afro Americans to complete this training. Don would go on to serve as part of the commissioning crew for USS NAUTILUS (SSN 571) and was onboard for their first attempt at crossing the North Pole. He would also serve aboard USS ENTEMEDOR (SS 340) 1958 - 1959, USS TRITON (SSRN 586) 1959 - 1961, and USS NAUTILUS (SSN 571) from 1963 - 1966. For many years Don was Admiral Hyman G. Rickover's personal barber, any time the Admiral came to Groton CT. He retired from the Navy as an SD3(SS). Don Wilson joined US SUBVETS Groton Base as a Life Member in Jan 2001 and was inducted into the prestigious HOLLAND CLUB in 2002. Don was a special individual, and he was a fighter. No matter what his condition he always fought hard to be present with his shipmates at our meetings and our Memorial Services. Don also used to ride with the SUBVETS in the annual town of Groton parade. And when it came time to sound off, he always faught hard to stand up and be recognized like the others. We have lost a Shipmate and a friend, and our country has lost a true patriot and one of our pioneers in the Nuclear Submarine Navy. Members of SUBVETS Groton Base will muster this Thursday evening 22 Mar at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, 60 Blackhall Street, New London at 6:15 to pay our final Honors to Shipmate Don Wilson. Those interested in attending should contact Groton Base Chaplain Tom Russell at (860) 536-7733 to let him know that you will be participating with us. I received this from Shipmate Wally Krupenevich.
And then some starless night the cable slips leaving only an eddy at the mooring place. Gulls veer no longer. Sailor rest your oar. No tangled wreckage will be washed ashore"
HAND SALUTE
Shipmate Don Wilson . . . Rest your oar.
