Does anyone remember in 1965, I believe it was the second op during the summer, when we broached one dark night to clean the periscope windows? If I recall, Capt. Rawlings and another (I think it was QM2 Kucko but not sure) went to the bridge. The engineer (can't remember his name either), had the Conn. We lost depth control needless to saywhen water started pouring down the upper access hatch the engineer was trying to close it, Kucko was trying to keep it open and one of the control watchstanders was trying to close the lower hatch. I had the ECM watch in middle level ops and looked forward and all I saw was water pouring into the crew's mess. Mike Charcoal was working on the WLR-1 tuner stack and we had a mess afterwards. Fortunately, we got depth control back and when we cleared the water, the CO and his assistant were standing on top of the sail hanging onto the scopes, waiting for us to get up and acting as if nothing had happened. and waiting for us to get up. Don't know if we ever got the lens cleaned and waxed or not. Bill Hollaway, CTT2(SS)
