It's possible for a band to overplay the use of their own dynamics, and Low can be used as an example of this- The use of sparseness and space in their music is clearly something which defines their overall sound, and where this is used to great effect on a handful of songs, it serves only to highlight a monotonous musical approach throughout their back cataolgue.
In small doses, Low are enjoyable to listen to, but within the context of a full album's worth of material, the subtleties which impress the listener over the course of two or three tracks, become way less impressive when employed throughout the album. "But, what about a track such as 'Canada' ?", I hear you cry; obviously a more upbeat, poppy and loud (?) song for Low- something of a surprise when you first hear it on the album, but clearly it's an exception to the rule and tracks like this are few and far between- I personally think that it's one of their weaker songs- So there you have it... too much of a one dimensional approach to a group sound, only detracts from the initial appeal of that sound. Therefore Low are Crap! Next...
