At the time in which Bob Dylan took two members of the band (or the hawks as they were then known) on tour it was when he was getting FREQUENTLY booed offstage as a result of his 'electric' take on folk. Levon Helm even left cos of this. I think it is therefore fair to say that it was on their own merit and innovative folk rock that has won them so much recognition. and the fact that garth hudson has the best beard ever.
